Perfect Potatoes

Refrigerated box store up and running…

Potato grower Reg Few contacted potato and onion storage system specialists Farm Electronics to help him come up with a specification for a new refrigerated potato box store.

Mr. Few supplies processed potatoes to the fish and chip trade and pre-packed potatoes to wholesalers and required the new building at Chapel Farm, Benwick in Cambridgeshire.

A building of 36m long x 24m wide x 7.5m eaves was specified, with a central dividing wall providing two separate zones, each holding 1087 tonnes of potatoes in 1.25 tonne boxes stacked six high.

A. C. Bacon Engineering Ltd. were chosen as the agricultural buildings specialist, and being a proud holder of the Royal Warrant of Appointment as a tradesman to The Queen for the manufacture of steel-framed buildings, Mr. Few knew that he would be getting the required quality and service.

The store was completed in time for harvest and despite a difficult season both zones are full and thanks to latest technology, the surface moisture in the crop dried out quickly and down to the required temperature for the long storage season.

Reg Few said "This is our first season of storage and the store has performed perfectly. It is simplicity itself and all I have had to do is to switch it on and the computer's brain looks after the cooling and ventilation of both sides of the store”.
