Fab Shortlist

Sandringham Royal Stud project in line for a FAB award...

The two new buildings A.C. Bacon Engineering recently completed at the Royal Studs Commodore Yard, have been shortlisted for the first-ever Farm and Agricultural Buildings (FAB) awards run by the Rural and Industrial Design and Building Association (RIDBA).

The competition attracted dozens of entries but a shortlist of nine for a total of seven awards has been drawn up.

The winners will be presented with their prizes by TV presenter Kate Humble at a ceremony in Bath this Friday, 19th April.

The awards were launched in RIDBA's 56th anniversary of its formation as the Farm Buildings Association to recognise excellence in farm buildings and to reward contractors and clients. The scheme recognises buildings that are sympathetic to, and even complementary to, the local landscape, and that are fit for purpose and sustainable - factors that are reflected in the award categories of aesthetics, functionality and sustainability.

An American Barn and Stables were commissioned as replacements for a range of existing timber structures, which also included a Tack Room, Vets Room, Feed Store and Mess Room.

Joe Grimwade, Manager of The Royal Studs, confirmed that “the project involved several local contractors and required careful planning and co-operation to ensure completion within a tight timescale. There was a particular desire to minimise environmental impact - both in terms of the visual impact of the new buildings and with regard to Carbon footprint.

Bacon's completed the erection of two steel frames, roofing and cladding with great efficiency and within the time schedule. They were particularly co-operative both in working with the other contractors as well as in ensuring that unplanned detail requirements were completed quickly and efficiently.

The project is now completed and has provided an excellent facility with stabling for 20 horses, staff room, feed store and veterinary examination area. The buildings are particularly attractive and fit comfortably into their environment; the construction process and end result have surpassed my expectations.”
