By appointment to her majesty the queen - manufacturer of steel framed buildings A.C Bacon Engineering Ltd

FAB Awards - Shortlisted Entry 4

Lindum Group - Doubledays, Swineshead

This building is prominently located on the A17 within the heart of Lincolnshire's farming community.

Owing to its prominent location and the nature of the clients business (agriculture machinery sales and servicing), it was of paramount importance that the building portrayed the clients professional image and branding, whilst having due consideration for potential future uses.

The large expanse of glazing to the front elevation gives maximum visibility to the showroom, whilst the front and A17 facing elevations adopt a higher quality vertically laid silver microrib cladding system broken up by areas of more industrial cladding; paying homage to the agricultural nature of the client business. The servicing and industrial parts to the business were deliberately located away from the A17 and screened by the building itself.

The building is essentially a workshop and showroom for agricultural machinery; however, a high quality office accommodation was included so the building would act as the clients head office and their showcase sales outlet.

The building surpasses the current Building Regulations minima whilst benefitting from a substantial PV array on the roof allowing our client to export energy to the grid.

The building was also designed for future versatility ensuring it could be used for a variety of uses including high quality office space, conferencing, car showrooms, HGV Servicing, etc.

The building has high demand for electricity and water consumption for the machinery wash down area. Providing the maximum possible amount of photo voltaic panels on the roof (49kwp system) enabled the building to generate power in an environmentally friendly way. The water consumption was handled by installing a 10,000 litre water tank with a biological wash water recycling system. 100% of the water can be collected from the vehicle wash process and cleaned resulting in 90-95% of the total water used to be reused again and again.
